The Love Experiment (hereafter LEX) is a future soul band/collective based in New York.
Individual members are active as producers, songwriters, and musicians in the soul/R&B, jazz, and hip-hop scenes, boasting extensive collaborations with big names such as Lauryn Hill, Nas, Anderson .Paak, Solange, and Corey Henry, as well as emerging artists like Amber Mark, Poppy Ajudha, and Standing on the Corner.
Their new album, "Velvet," following their self-titled debut album "The Love Experiment" in 2016, blends raw band grooves with cosmic sound design, creating a luxurious and comfortable feel, like velvet, combining warmth and luster.
Born in the late 80s to early 90s, when velvet tracksuits were in vogue, LEX members feel nostalgia for the music of that era. Instead of imitating it, they drew inspiration from grooves and serendipitous moments born from their sessions to create music that feels comfortable and fresh to them now. This album, which coexists with warm sounds from analog synths, drum machines, and vintage equipment, and an experimental approach to song structure, time signatures, and sound design, will emit a nostalgic and special glow for generations 20 or 30 years from now.
LEX, which also functions as a collective, has added Syl DuBenion (saxophone/vocals), a member of New York's avant-garde jazz and hip-hop collective Standing on the Corner, to their rotation for this work, adopting a twin vocal style with Kim Mayo (vocals). This album presents new possibilities for LEX.
Featured artists include J. Hoard, a former LEX member who won a Grammy for songwriting on Chance the Rapper's "No Problem" and also serves as a vocalist for the host band of New York's premier jam session
In songwriting and production, each member flexibly changes roles, bringing a diverse range of featured artists into their crew as LEX's spaceship takes off into the universe they gaze upon.
